Since the day I met her, Carol has always made me feel beautiful! By charmed circumstance, ‘C’ has been my hair stylist and dear friend for several years, and I couldn’t be luckier to have her in my life! <3

When C asked if I would be interested in reviving her Grandma’s antique desk, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was somewhat hesitant. Could I possibly make this very sentimental piece look and feel as beautiful as C always makes me look and feel?!  Although it held immense charm, this piece looked and felt like I do before C does her beautiful magic on me — drab, lifeless and in need of much love!

At first glance, the piece didn’t appear to have much damage… however once I got to working on it, I learned there was much more than I thought. It appeared to have been subject to perhaps some water damage, and naturally with it’s age other timeworn impairments. Despite much chipped, peeling and cracking veneer — the piece was in very solid form and the drawers were in excellent condition! After some stripping, sanding, gluing, filling and more sanding I was ready to move onto the fun part!

C and I agreed that the finished piece should contain portions of natural wood contrast… that was an easy decision. The somewhat hard decision was deciding on what colour chalk paint to go with! With Country Chic Paint’s abundance of lovely colours to choose from — how does one decide?!

At first C was thinking we should go with Country Chic Paint’s ‘Cheesecake’ colour… which is my hands-down FAV… however after more careful thought, we decided to go with ‘Liquorice’… which I’m so happy about! We were inspired by a very similar, and most charming piece transformed by a very talented lady — Abbey of Painted Home Goods!  Thank you for the lovely inspiration Abbey! <3

Although my repairing didn’t result in perfection, once painted the damaged areas are now only visible upon close inspection. After repairing and thoroughly cleaning the piece, my Liquorice Love transformation went like this:

  • Applied 2 coats of Country Chic Paint’s ‘Hemp Oil’ to the top and handles ~ I could honestly hear and see the wood slurping and gulping this lovely all-natural product up… and oh my the transformation it provided to the natural wood! <3
  • Applied 2 coats of Country Chic Paint’s ‘All-In-One Decor Paint’ in the colour ‘Liquorice’ to the body
  • Lightly distressed areas of the body with sanding block where natural wear would occur
  • Applied 1 coat of Country Chic Paint’s ‘Natural Wax’ to the body for protection

And there you have it… Liquorice Love for my C! If she finds this piece half as beautiful as she makes me feel, then I’m a winner with this project! 🙂
