Antique Washstand Transformed Bedside Table

We’ve been doing a lil’ reno job in our boys’ room.  It started with fresh paint on the walls and baseboards, followed by our own DIY softwood floor install (which I’ll be blogging deets about very soon), then a tallboy dresser restoration, and last but certainly not least this antique washstand transformation!

These charming pieces are the perfect size for bedroom nightstands!  Just close your eyes and imagine! ❤️👌🏻

My imagination process:

• Removed hardware ~ in great need of a polish
• Removed sticky film from top ~ ‘Goof Off’ does the trick like a breeze (no goofing around)
• Sanded down top to bare wood ~ finish was for the most part flaked off, so stripper wasn’t required
• Repaired crack in top ~ ‘Gorilla Glue’ is my go-to always-reliable wood glue
• Lightly sanded down body ~ to best prepare for chalk paint adhesion
• Vacuumed and cleaned ~ final prep before the real fun begins
• Applied 2 coats of Country Chic Paint ‘All-In-One Decor Paint’ in the colour ‘Liquorice’ ~ quite simply the most perfect shade of black
• Lightly sanded down for a buttery smooth and distressed finish ~ for a charming farmhouse chic look
• Applied 2 coats of Country Chic Paint ‘Hemp Oil’ to the entire piece for a protective and water-resistant surface ~ 100% all-natural sustainably sourced from Canadian farmers
• Conditioned, stained and varnished top with Minwax products ~ thirst quenching yummy-ness
• Removed caster wheels ~ sadly they were far too damaged, and I didn’t have any fitting replacements
• Polished up the hardware and reinstalled ~ ‘Brasso’ works like a charm

I closed my eyes and imagined that this delightful antique washstand be a bedside table for our boys’ room. Our now 19 y/o boy has grown all too quickly, leaving us with many days and nights without him at home with us… but for the days and nights that he is, I hope he finds much peace and comfort in his bedroom —that will always and forever be a haven for him. <3
